My Story: The Meat and Potatoes Kid

I had the typical childhood of Midwest meat and potatoes, with very few green vegetables, if any vegetables, and tons of sugar, candy, hot dogs (extra long), and pizza. I was the kid that could never just eat one; it was as much as I could stuff in my mouth. I would down several pounds of Halloween candy in a few days and drink lots of orange and grape soda. I spent a lot of time at my grandmother’s house due to her incredible ability to make cakes lots of cakes. I do remember at age 11, feeling weird lightheadedness, which I know now was blood sugar issues, but mostly my body felt fine, so there was no motivating push to eat better. I then went into sports football, track and wrestling and really pushed myself with very little recovery, ending up with lots of injuries, and even bone loss (due to trying to cut weight). I used to eat nothing, but drink a small amount of water a few days before a wrestling match to make weight. I lost several pounds, but was exhausted and stressed. Then after weighing in and making weight, I would consume a VERY large submarine sandwich. This cycle continued throughout college, and was compounded with lots of throat infections and motorcycle injuries. I was starting to wear out just after high school ¦so of course, I decided to join the army! Three months later, I could barely pass the physical fitness training because there was no rest, extremely hard work, and I was eating very poor foods.

Going through college, I pretty much lived on cheap refined carbohydrates, lots of coffee (Cuban coffee), and never ate any vegetables (justifying this by saying, I’ll eat better when I graduate ). The closest I came to improving my health was eating skinless chicken, low fat pizza, and diet foods. But I did take my vitamins (Centrum Silver)! I was experiencing right shoulder pain from what I thought was a dirt bike injury, but it was getting more severe. Little did I know that the Crisco from all those ˜Deep Fried Food Nights’ at college had destroyed my liver. Adding insult to injury, I also consumed huge helpings of salty Doritos and chips the extra large bags! All this was compounded by the stress of college, pushing myself to achieve relentless goals with no sleep.

I started getting severe heart burn. I would carry around the super packs of anti-acid tablets and swallow them down like candy. I had developed chronic right shoulder pain, which I would get treated Chiropractic, even though this never helped. Little did I know, my liver and gallbladder were getting very sick. After graduation, I started my practice, which in part, was fueled by a desire to correct my own personal health struggles. I decided, It’s time to be healthy, so I became a vegetarian. Of course, I tried to do this without eating actual vegetables, only cheap soy products, refined breads, pasta, and lots of prunes (to help my never ending digestive problems). I also had ample servings of fruit and vegetable juices (carrot and apple), which I now know, helped to destroy my blood sugar. I was always tired, but at the same time, I couldn’t sleep. My intestines were like cement, and I always seemed to have bags under my eyes. I just couldn’t wake up (even after a full night of rest) and always felt half-asleep. Strangely, at night my legs became so restless, I would get out of bed and run at 5 in the morning to get the energy out. I had become completely dependent on naps as well. I would go to the park with my kids and not feel like I was really there I was too tired for everything it seemed. One time I went out with my wife to eat and I actually told her that I had to go back in the car to take a nap, and left her alone in the restaurant! (That didn’t go over too well!) Needless to say, I was searching for solutions. I frequented virtually every vitamin and health food store, and tried all sorts of energy gimmicks . I was willing to experiment with virtually every Promises Better Health Vitamin or Solution around, but still wasn’t getting results. One day my wife asked me if I knew the definition of Hypochondriac. She said, It’s the number of vitamins you have in your cupboard. And I had a warehouse!

berg6By age 28, I had arthritis in my mid and lower back, and severe right shoulder pain. My blood sugar was unhealthy and my diet was not much better. Through my research, I stumbled onto an interesting book. After reading the first chapter of Mastering the Zone (a diet book which provides information about insulin and protein requirements), I decided I required a protein breakfast. The next day I ate a buffalo burger for breakfast instead of my regular low fat muffin, and believe it or not, I actually felt better! This was the turning point realizing that I didn’t do well with grains or sugars. Instead of balancing my calories of proteins, carbohydrates and fats, I began focusing on increasing higher nutrients within those proteins, carbohydrates and fats. I shifted my diet considerably and began consuming huge salads of kale, carrots and deep greens. Finally my body was bouncing back I GOT MY ENERGY BACK! This was exciting. I was able to keep up with my kids finally. I started intensely studying nutrition, quit my full-time Chiropractic Practice, and delved deeply into endocrine health, acupressure, and alternative care. I was 32 years old. From personal experience, I was driven to study intensely everything I could get my hands on in the fields of endocrinology and the autonomic nervous system, Chinese medicine, nutrition, and exercise physiology. I had a large testing group my patients to test what worked and what didn’t. The results got better and better until word had spread, and I ended up teaching these methods to members of the medical profession, Chiropractors, and other allied professionals. I discovered that there wasn’t one universal one-size-fits-all nutritional plan that worked the same on every body.

Through my intense research, I have developed four basic body types, which serve my finding of the four basic health imbalances, each with their own distinct characteristics and needs. My mission is to extract from the sea of confusion these very powerful technologies in the field of health and wellness, so that others can easily recapture their health, and avoid the blood, sweat and tears of trying to keep their bodies vital and healthy.

I am happy to say that I was my very first
success story. I got my health back, and so can you!
